Residence Hall Code

A safe and constructive environment is a necessary condition for excellence. Accordingly, residents are bound by the following code of personal and group conduct.

1. Possessing, consuming, or otherwise using alcohol, narcotics, or other controlled substances will result in dismissal from the Workshop. In addition, remaining present while another is possessing, consuming, or otherwise using controlled substances or alcohol will result in dismissal from the Workshop.

2. Dismantling a smoke detector and purposefully setting off a fire alarm in the absence of fire are both crimes. Any violation will result in dismissal from the Workshop. Likewise, burning substances is strictly forbidden.

3. Possession or consumption of tobacco or tobacco related products is prohibited. Under New Hampshire state law, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase, possess or consume tobacco or tobacco related products. Anyone 13 or above will be prosecuted as an adult in the Lebanon NH District Court. Each offense is a $100.00 fine.

4. Respect for the dignity, safety, and property of others, including Workshop students, staff, and Dartmouth College, is assumed and expected. Stealing, damaging property, or supporting such activity is grounds for dismissal from the Workshop.

5. Keep rooms in good condition. There will be periodic room inspections to make sure rooms are reasonably clean. These will occur at room check, and rooms must pass inspection for occupants to be checked in. Trash can be emptied in the barrels in the restrooms. Before students may leave the Workshop, rooms must be clean and empty, except for the property of the College. Do not attach things to the walls or ceiling of any room in the residence hall or other College building, and do not move furniture between rooms in the residence hall or other College building. Screens must not be removed from windows.

6. Keep common areas clean; use the trash barrels and recycling bins. Do not leave debate work or personal items in common areas; they are likely to be thrown away. Do not leave any personal belongings or toilet articles in the restrooms; these items will probably be thrown away.

7. Room check begins at 11:00 p.m. Students must be in their assigned rooms, on time, doors opened, waiting to be checked-in. (Name cards should not be removed from the doors. If cards are defaced or otherwise "personalized," the name of the resident must not be altered since these cards assist in room check.) Students may leave their rooms after they have been checked in, subject to the limitations listed below

8. Students are not permitted on the corridors of students of the opposite sex after room check. Students may meet in the common areas. Do not meet or congregate in hallways or in the stairwell.

9. Students are not permitted to leave the residence hall after room check. From the time of check-in at 11:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m., all students will remain inside the residence hall, and no student should leave for any reason, except fire.

10. From 1:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m., all students are restricted to their assigned rooms. After 1:00 a.m., Workshop student’s lights must be out. Senior Assistants also may be assigned “lights out.”

11. Quiet hours are from room check until 7:00 a.m.

12. Food orders must be placed in time to be delivered before 1:00 a.m.; therefore, pizza establishments will not accept orders after 12:30 a.m.

13. Visitors who are not associated with the Workshop, should check-in with one of the Residence Hall Director, Peter Cancro (Cohen 102D). No visitors are permitted in the residence hall after room check.

14. Students are not to enter other College residence halls, classroom buildings, or other facilities without permission from the Workshop. Students are not permitted in Brown Hall, except for scheduled Workshop activities. Students should not go above the first floor of Brown.

15. Students should not swim in the Connecticut River, except when a lifeguard is present.

16. Violations and infractions of the foregoing policy will result in disciplinary action. Sanctions include warning, restricted privileges, mandatory lights out, work detail, parent telephone conference, and/or dismissal from the Workshop. Students on work detail will be given an official notice (verbal and/or written). The detail usually cleans the residence halls.
